Our Homes

Eco-Technologies

There are key differences between Hapori and other eco-villages

  • The lead community planner and other community members are working hands-on alongside workers, identifying, pruning and replanting plants, moving soil, clearing and laying trails and paths, and getting a personal feel for the land itself.
  • Implementation of cohousing concepts, including social and organizational elements, and communication training.
  • No use of wells for water. Rainwater systems are sized appropriate to the environment and capture surfaces.
  • Construction and infrastructure is designed and configured based on actual climatic conditions, and topography.
  • Instead of cutting into existing forest or jungle, we are working to regenerate damaged grazing land.
  • Existing plants, especially established trees are mapped and preserved in construction plans. Landscaping considers the existing plants, and is focused on regeneration on the local flora.

Water System

  • Rain-water collection, storage, use, and reuse.
  • Sewage is processed in a biodigester.
  • Control, absorption, and use of surface water to mitigate erosion and enhance regeneration with swales, holding ponds, and biopools.

Energy System

  • Off-grid solar, with emergency battery reserves for food storage and lighting.
  • Net zero Energy principles.
  • Free standing solar panels improve access for maintenance, and provide shaded spaces.

Building Design

  • Timber, sillar (volcanic brick), or adobe construction
  • Passive Thermal Design and Insulation
  • Efficient use of space
  • Co-location of systems (e.g. efficient plumbing layouts)
